How to win in the age of cyber war

While the bad news is that experts are declaring that we have entered the age of cyber war, the worse news as we enter 2012 is that security systems and professionals are just not able to keep up. Security attacks are increasing in their complexity and intensity every day. These range from inter-state attacks (like the one on Raytheon this year and the ones from China that are being investigated by the U.S. government) to cyber-crime (that includes countless malware and DDOS attacks against businesses and consumers).

4 full bars but no buzz?… start doing DPI

Ever been in a situation where you have four full bars but can’t make a call? I have, and that’s what made me realize that signal strength is but one of many factors that affect connectivity. Fancy wireless techniques like spatial beam forming and frame aggregation between the cell tower and the phone sounds really cool but if the network is congested at the back end then magic on the radio side won’t amount to much for the user. Using real apps to test billing and charging on 4G/LTE networks

The hype, and in many cases concern around DPI has always been strong. It has triggered provocative debate on the Internet around privacy, end user rights, the role of the operator, and the extent to which they can monitor what applications we send and receive on the Internet.

The truth is that DPI isn’t just an emerging technology; it’s actually a reality, showing up on traditional fixed line networks, enterprise networks and most recently on mobile networks. Recently, Telefonica announced the deployment of Sandvine’s network policy control solutions to provide visibility across the network for some 250 million subscribers across 20 countries.

Mu Dynamics – Now A Cloud Company!

Here’s the news.. Mu has in many ways transformed itself into a Cloud company. This may seem surprising since the shift has happened at many levels and not always in a synchronized or premeditated manner. But the shift has already happened and it is both profound and exciting at the same time. Here’s why…

UXD versus Features – our users speak

We recently launched the Mu Studio Performance Suite. It introduced many exciting new capabilities  including instant access to Multiple thousands of tests on Mu TestCloud, Multiple tracks, Multiple performance engines etc.

While these are certainly very useful features that bring tremendous benefits to the user, what really got users excited and had an emotional impact was not the features but the design (UXD). To me, what’s been really cool to experience is how discussions with new users quietly shift in quality – from ‘do you have more features than the other tool?’  to ‘WOW! You guys have thought through how I want to test.’

Attacks @ Scale

Last month we added a new space on TestCloud with thousands of known attacks as .msl templates. Some of you may recall that the secret behind the speed of test creation with Mu is in the way we can take in a wide variety of formats including .pcap, .har, curl to name a few and convert it into MuSL. So what we did was we took another look at our known attack templates and made that available as .msl templates.

Release 5.7.0 – Multiple Scale Players and LTE smarts

Our first release of the year brings two very useful capabilities to users – Multiple Scale Players and LTE smarts.
More scale and smarter scale for a wider set of real applications seems to be the emerging trend in the market. It’s no longer just about protocol support or raw throughput numbers. Unpredictable demand of applications post-launch is becoming the main challenge and our customers are demanding ways to replicate this in the test lab.

Net Neutrality – Freedom with Responsibility

On Tuesday the FCC came out with a controversial ruling that partially allows service providers to regulate their traffic to avoid congestion and prevent malicious or unfair use of their networks.  The issue is a complicated one that has passionate supporters on both sides. How much to trust big companies to do the right thing? How much to regulate them to ensure fairness and social equity without hampering growth and financial equity. These are old questions but what is interesting to me is why this is becoming a hot issue now?

Wikileaks, DDOS & Mu Dynamics

Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought of a connection between Wikileaks, the arrest of Julian Assange and Mu Dynamics. What’s the connection between us and them? Well it turns out there might be one after all.

‘Tis the season of giving – all year round

Another compact yet punchy monthly release (5.6.1) makes our Scale capability that much more valuable to our user base at no additional charge. There are plenty of examples of how we are bringing real value to our users but the most recent one is that we just upped the capability per scale player by 5x compared to the previous release. What that means is that all our current users automatically and at no extra charge get 5 times more concurrencies per Scale player license. Our belief is that users will love, respect and reward us if we keep them happy and add value to them on a regular basis. That attitude forms the basis of our product development efforts and in fact to all groups within the company.
